Things to Do in Kartasura & Nearby: One-Day Route and Tips

Share

Kartasura is often treated as a junction town between Solo, Boyolali, and Klaten. Yet it carries real history: this is where the Islamic Mataram capital once stood before it moved to Surakarta in 1745. If you are staying or passing through, a few destinations are realistic to reach without going deep into central Solo.

In short: for a relaxed half day with photos, pick the former sugar factory in Pabelan. For history, visit the old palace site. For nature, set aside more time for the Lawu slopes or southern Sukoharjo.

Things to do in Kartasura and nearby: quick summary

Kartasura Palace remainsHistory, quiet visits1 to 1.5 hours
Gunung Sepikul, BuluNature, easy walksHalf a day
The Lawu Park, KaranganyarNature, outdoor activitiesFull day

Travel time depends on traffic. Kartasura is a congested junction at commute hours, so avoid moving between places then.

1. Rasamadu Heritage, a former sugar factory in Pabelan

Rasamadu Heritage occupies a colonial-era sugar factory complex on Jl. Permata Raya, Dukuh Tegal Mulyo, Pabelan, Kartasura. The old buildings and brick corridors once used for production are now a place to stroll, take photos, and eat. There is an outdoor area, a Cubic Room, a Transportation Museum, and food and beverage outlets.

Practical points:

  • Open daily. Weekdays 09.00 to 22.00 WIB, weekends from 08.00 WIB.
  • Outdoor tickets are Rp30,000 (weekdays) and Rp35,000 (weekends and holidays). Packages with the Cubic Room and Transportation Museum cost more, and there is an F&B credit package at Rp100,000. Parking is not included. Prices may change, so check the official page before you go.
  • Group tickets are available for 25 people or more, useful for office or school groups.

Weekend mornings are the sweet spot: softer light and fewer people. Late afternoon into evening suits you if you want lighting and a relaxed hangout. For the background, read the story of the sugar factory turned destination.

One clarification: another attraction called The Heritage Palace is also in the Pabelan area. It is a different venue and unrelated to Rasamadu Heritage, so confirm the destination name on your map app.

2. Kartasura Palace remains

Keraton Kartasura was built in the late 17th century under Amangkurat II of Mataram. It was badly damaged during the Geger Pecinan uprising around 1742 to 1743, and Pakubuwono II then moved the court to the village of Sala, later Surakarta, in 1745. Sources differ on exact years, so treat these as approximate.

On the ground, the main buildings are gone. What remains is the site, some structural traces, and homes in Dusun II Ngadirejo. Do not expect something like the Surakarta palace. It suits people who enjoy imagining history from what is left and do not mind a quiet place without full tourist facilities. For more context, pair it with our one-day history and culture route in Solo.

3. Gunung Sepikul and Sukoharjo nature

Gunung Sepikul in Bulu, Sukoharjo, is described in sources we found as a nature spot with free entry, about 20 km from Sukoharjo town square or roughly 30 minutes by vehicle. It is for easy walks and views, not theme-park facilities. Conditions and rules can change, so ask locals or the manager first.

4. The Lawu Park, Karanganyar

For cooler air and outdoor activities, The Lawu Park at the foot of Mount Lawu offers light hiking, forest walks, a flying fox, and a sky walk. It is about an hour from Kartasura, so plan it as a full-day trip rather than a quick add-on.

Also note that Pandawa Water World in Solo Baru has permanently closed, so skip it if you see it in older articles.

Building a one-day route

Pick based on your energy:

  1. Relaxed and close: the Kartasura palace site in the morning, then Rasamadu Heritage from midday into the evening.
  2. Nature focus: leave early for Karanganyar, return in the afternoon, and have dinner around Kartasura.
  3. With kids: choose one main place and build in rest breaks. See also kid-friendly places in Solo.

A common mistake is stacking too many stops and getting stuck at the Kartasura junction. Two destinations is enough.
