Jogja to Solo Day Trip by KRL: A Realistic One-Day Route

Share

Getting from Jogja to Solo for a day is easy with the KRL Commuter Line, and it is the most practical way if you would rather not drive. The ride takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours one way, with a flat fare of about Rp8,000 (cashless, via a card or the Access by KAI app). This guide lays out a realistic day-trip route so you spend your time at a few good places to visit in Solo rather than on the road.

Note: KRL timetables change and differ between sources. Check the latest schedule in the Access by KAI app before you go. Opening hours and ticket prices below should also be confirmed through each venue's official channel.

At a Glance: A Sensible Jogja-to-Solo Day Trip

  • Depart: a morning train from Yogyakarta/Tugu or Lempuyangan, aiming to arrive in Solo before 09.00.
  • Get off at: Purwosari or Solo Balapan, depending on your first stop.
  • Number of stops: 3 to 4 is enough. More than that usually turns into a rush.
  • Return: take an afternoon or early-evening train. The KRL runs into the night, but do not cut it close to the last one.

Sample Route: Culture, Food, then Heritage

1. Morning: the Keraton area

From Solo Balapan or Purwosari, take a ride-hailing car or taxi to the Keraton Surakarta area. The palace has visiting hours and areas that can be entered, so check whether a traditional ceremony is on that day. If you like cultural collections, Museum Radya Pustaka fits the same route. More detail is in our guide to history and culture sights in Solo.

2. Midday: eat and walk

Solo has plenty of lunch options, and Pasar Gede and its surroundings are a popular snacking area. To plan your order of dishes, see legendary Solo food by meal time. A practical tip: have one proper meal and graze on small bites otherwise, so you are not full by the afternoon.

3. Afternoon: Kartasura for a change of mood

Rasamadu Heritage is a former sugar factory in Kartasura, now a tourism destination with an outdoor area, Cubic Rooms, a Transportation Museum and a place to eat. It is located in Honggobayan, Pabelan, Kartasura, Sukoharjo. According to its official site, it opens 09.00 to 22.00 WIB on weekdays and 08.00 to 22.00 WIB on weekends. The outdoor-only ticket starts at Rp30,000 on weekdays, and parking is not included (confirm current prices on the official site).

Because it stays open late, it works well as the closing stop. Arrive in the afternoon, have dinner, then head back to the station before it gets too late. Note that Rasamadu Heritage is different from "The Heritage Palace" in Sukoharjo, so double-check your map pin. More options in that direction are in things to do in Kartasura and nearby.

Getting Around Solo

The KRL takes you to a station, not to the attraction's door. From there you need a ride-hailing service, a taxi or city transport. Kartasura is not on the Jogja-Solo KRL line, so you will need a connecting vehicle from Purwosari or another station. More car-free ideas are in visiting Solo without a car. Allow for longer waits on weekends and long holidays, when demand rises.

Common Mistakes

  1. Too many stops. Four places plus travel time between them already fills a day.
  2. Not checking the return timetable. Train frequency is not even across the day. Save your return times in the morning.
  3. Ignoring the weather. If it rains, shift to indoor spots. See Solo attractions for rainy days.
  4. Carrying too much. Bring a small bag, since you will switch vehicles often.

When to Stay Overnight Instead

If you want more than culture and food, or you travel with small children or older parents, one night in Solo is more comfortable than forcing it into a day. See our 2-day, 1-night Solo itinerary for comparison.
